Homestead Tourism

COBATI works with local villages to develop home and village stays. Homestead tourism provides travelers with an authentic travel experience and empowers communities to generate income.

“Until we hosted tourists from Spain, we used to think there was nothing special about our food, like our gurusa (a salty pancake made out of maize flour) or Sombe (a mixture of cassava leaves with groundnuts.)”.

  Ongoing Projects

Bombo Community Tourism Initiative

The Bombo Community-Based Tourism Initiative is a village-based tourism cluster made up of three homestays, a women handcraft group, traditional dancers, and a mini cultural centre. COBATI implemented the project with financial support from the MTN Uganda Foundation. The initiative is community-owned by Nubians in Bombo under their umbrella association of Uganda Nubian Consultative Forum. This project started in October 2009 and was successfully launched May 2011. We are currently in the monitoring and evaluation stage.

Get Involved!

We are looking for volunteers to support the Bombo community Tourism Initiative. Our Homestay program offers volunteer opportunities to teach in a rural school, recycle waste into crafts, and use basic carpentry skills for building projects. Please contact COBATI to inquire about volunteering. You can also adopt this project by making a one time or ongoing donation.

  Past Projects

COBATI has worked on a number of projects to empower people through community tourism training.

  • Conducted a project in Buhoma Village in 2003 that provided in-depth training to 9 Buhoma Village community walk guides and homesteads participating in the community village walk in order to improve their level of performance.

  • Trained 27 Board Members of Nkuringo Conservation and Development Foundation (NCDF) to acquire a hands-on experience in community based tourism development.

  • Trained Local government staff and selected community members supported by the UNDP/Private Sector Development Programme in the districts of Bushenyi and Soroti.
  • Trained members of the Uganda Community Tourism Association to participate in Uganda’s first Tourism Expo under the theme “Destination Uganda Tourism Expo 2005” at the Source of the River Nile, Jinja (December 2 – 4, 2005). Wellsprings Adventure Club Ltd. Organized the Expo in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism Trade and Industry and SNV- Netherlands Development Organisation.
